State Representative Debbie Riddle (R – District 150) will again file a bill that allows state and local law enforcement officers to arrest those who are in the country illegally.

Bookmark and Share

Last session, Riddle filed House Bill 49, which would have created a new criminal violation: Criminal Trespass by Illegal Aliens. She says she will introduce the same measure during the pre-filing period in November that precedes the new Texas legislative session in January.

“Despite all the national controversy, this is a common sense bill, pure and simple,” Riddle said. “It does nothing but allow law enforcement to do their job: arrest those who are breaking the law.”

Unlike a similar act passed recently in Arizona, Riddle’s bill requires law enforcement to confirm the immigration status of a suspect with US Customs and Immigration Enforcement before making an arrest and does not require the suspect to produce identification. Under the language of HB 49, an officer would have to have reasonable suspicion that the person was present in the country illegally before making the inquiry.

Riddle said she believes the legislature will pass the bill in the upcoming session.

“Nothing less than our national security is at stake when it comes to illegal immigration,” Riddle said. “With the violence escalating along the border, the rest of the state and country has suddenly awakened to a reality that my district has known all along: the safety and security of our citizens is in jeopardy and will continue to be in jeopardy until we secure our border.”

More of the Same
written by A Thinking Texan, May 28, 2010
Ah, behold the right-wing propaganda machine in action. It's amazing how movement conservatives like Ms. Riddle constantly stoke up the fear to get re-elected and to push forward their agenda, which always comes out favoring the mega-rich and the multinational corporations. Oh, and this serves double duty: not only does it crank up the terror, it's a coded racist message. After all, it's not aimed at "illegal aliens" from, say, Canada - it's clearly pandering to anti-Hispanic bigotry. Vile and pathetic on so many levels.

Then there's the "news" on this web site. Always the viewpoints of the movement conservatives. Apparently, there are no progressive Texans exist. In all, this web site is about as fair and balanced as Fox News.

It is no doubt that we need to take steps to provide a better and safer country for
our citizens. However, this appears to be racial profiling no matter how you cut it. The Law should not give police this power without strict protocol. We have enough problems with police over acting over reacting and violating citizens under the color of law. The fouth Amendment of the constitution is one that had been used so often to break the law and afforded by judges on the bench through interpetation and written opinon. We need to close these loop holes and apply the law in an equal and balanced method. Laws were never written to be fair, but equal. So there is no such thing a fair justice, but a balanced system of justice need to be afforded to those entitled. sooner or later we will find ourselves in a street war and the inability to control our own streets on a massive level. Yes check the people, but use a process where it does not create a racial divide, and a fight that the courts will not win without major loss of lives. The US citizens are going to challenge this process, organizations are going to challenge this, Civil Right's movements are going to shake the ground we walk on and then what? We need to think this out and cross the T's and dot the I's.

To many people are quick to rush to judgement! Including Police.. They are only human.

I can see where this act will cause anger around the world which may lead to more 911's which no one wants a repeate of. Sometime all it take is words...

Protect Our Borders
written by Anne, May 14, 2010
1. If I were of Hispanic origin I would resent the implication that I am too stupid or lazy to obtain and carry proper ID. Gee whiz, it is not that hard!! "They" say the reason Hispanic workers are so desired is because of their work ethic. But the same "they" are saying these same hard workers are too stupid or lazy to go get proper ID and carry it on them. Get your story straight folks.

2. It is not a matter of racism. It is a matter of economics and security. I don't care if you are blue, green or purple--if you are not here legally you are taking jobs away from Americans and using American resources illegally. Some say those are jobs that Americans don't want anyway. What about those American unskilled workers who are collecting Social Security or unemployment benefits? They could be forced to take an unskilled job while learning a trade to get off the dole.

3. When Americans travel in foreign lands (including Mexico and Canada) we are scrutinized at border customs and expected to carry a passport at all times. Why should our own laws be any less protective?

4. It is NOT that hard to carry a passport or a drivers license. My ancestors came to this country in the early 1700's and I am about as White Anglo-Saxon as you can get. I carry a passport with me all the time. Why??? To prove a point that it is not hard to have proper ID.

5. There is a reason people are flooding our borders to get away from the criminal culture that has permiated Mexico. Why on earth would we want that element to pass freely across our borders. We absolutely MUST PROTECT OUR BORDERS.

Two out of three Americans agree with AZ new law. I agree as well. Immigration is a wonderful thing. This great country was started in part by immigrants. Az's law is nothing new. The Federal government simply refuses to enforce the illegal alien law already on the books. I am not racist but I am against the pillage of our lands. The murdering of our citizens. It seems to me that only people that must sneak in the back door have something to hide. Good folks that apply for a green card, visa or citizenry are not the targeted individuals with this law. I support Debbie Riddle's House Bill 49.

You fully have my support. I to am not opposed to legal immigration but so many want to ignore the true definition of "illegal" and pretend that it is just another word with no meaning behind it. "Illegal Immigration" is a huge problem in our country and Americans are tired of our government looking the other way and not taking any action to rectify the problem. Something has to be done about this and has to be done today!

Violence south of the border is being caused by drug trafficking groups. Drugs are exported into the USA, the world's largest illegal drug market. If there was no demand, there would not me trafficking and thus there will not be the violence associated with it in Mexico. Mexico produces no weapons, There is only one store where you can legally buy them. It is run by the Army, with tight controls, in Mexico City. Solution: Allow planting and production in USA soil of whatever drugs are required by the american consumer and then efficiently exercise whatever controls you wish to implement as to quality, distribution, transportation and limits on consumption. And you can even implement laws to levy taxes in each one ot these activities. The Mexican people will applaud your decision. They are not enjoying the violence.
