I see “green people”. This is not the line for an upcoming Stephen Spielberg film, but the thoughts of minority business woman, Yvonne Killings when two years ago she formed what is now her new cutting edge company, Libra Enterprises, Inc., Libra is a wholesale manufacturer and distributor of organic antibacterial textiles and biodegradable sustainable products.

Admittedly so this is quite a tongue twister. But once you get past the twisting of the tongue, we want you to see the harmful effects of cotton and synthetic products and fabrics. It was speculated that the harmful chemicals, and fertilizers used both to grow and process cotton and synthetic fabrics and plastics may have a link to various birth defects, ADD/ADHD and other childhood and adult disorders.
Choosing green, biodegradable products protects you from pesticides, herbicides, hormones and other chemicals that are commonly used in conventional textiles and plastics. Many of these chemicals are used in the production of our sheets, clothing, water bottles, and even baby bottles, and have been linked to cancer, immune suppression and other degenerative diseases. |
Take comfort that there are alternatives. An alternative textile to the ones laden with chemicals and fertilizers is bamboo. Bamboo fabric is made from the inner lining of the bamboo plant, called the “kuhn” and to the touch feels like a silky-cashmere. Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal. No chemicals or fertilizers are needed or used in its growth. Bamboo is moisture wicking, odor resistant and UV protecting. This miracle plant is also sustainable and biodegradable.
However, textiles are not the only consumer group to see alternatives being introduced to replace our current chemically ridden products. Another market where we are witnessing the growth of alternative products is with food and beverage containers. Have you ever asked yourself why pay for organic meats and put them on plastic trays, or organic milk and put it in a plastic jug? Well now you can have a green, compostable alternative. Sugarcane, corn, and wheat, containers to replace the paper, plastic and styrofoam ones that are filling our land fills daily.
Change begins when one person commits.
