Since 1991, October has become the Energy Awareness Month. This year's theme “A Sustainable Energy Future; Putting All the Pieces Together” encourages everyone to see ourselves as a pieces of the puzzle and consider how we fit into the big picture as a problem solvers.
Businesses have their place on this footprint map, as an indisputable “part of the problem.” These same businesses need to become a more dynamic part of the solutions. Business owners and leaders have a very important role to play, in executing sustainable practices.
In order to contribute and begin to put all the pieces together, it is very important we create an energy saving system for our businesses and in our daily lives.
The process for the system implementation is quite simple. Here are the Key Steps:
- Step 1: Plan the Effort
- Step 2: Design and Implement the Program
- Step 3: Evaluate the Report Results
- Step 4: Sustain the Effort

If your business has already implemented a system, become a motivator agent. Everyone can do it, regardless of your role or type of business.
Several months ago, I was part of a great initiative at one of the monthly AMA-Houston Chapter, monthly meetings. During lunch, our table discussion captain suggested “business energy savings” as a conversation topic. Everyone at the table shared one of their business savings initiatives. What a great way to learn what others are doing and any lessons learned!
Just, in case you have no idea how to start your energy savings awareness program, here are some basic recommendations: |
Ø Recycle paper from the photocopy machine as scratch paper
Ø Donate magazines and newspapers to local schools and senior citizen’s homes
Ø Place recycle bins for the kitchen or break room waste; provide separate bins for paper, aluminum, and organic waste
Ø Switch off all unnecessary lights and equipment
Ø Use efficient ENERGY STAR® products
Ø Use compact fluorescent light bulbs
Ø Use power-down or sleep mode feature for CPU’s and monitors
Ø At the end of the day, turn your computer and printer off
I want to encourage you to implement other strategies in your own environment and invest in energy savings initiatives. Real solutions start with real people, just like you and me!
We invite all of you to get a discussion going. Please submit your comments at the end of this article, Thanks.
